About Joshua Salazar
A Little Background Information
I was born in Monterey, California on January 7, 1991. Spending most of my early years in California, I had a fairly normal upbringing. I never really had it in my mind that I'd ever try to become a professional musician for a living. In fact, if you would have asked me in my Freshman year of high school where I saw myself in ten years, I probably would have said either designing websites or designing videos games.
Of course, things do tend to change over time. As I grew closer to college age, I realized quickly that I had a knack for picking up musical instruments. In fact, I can now proudly say that I am a multi-instrumental musician, capable of playing not only my native instrument of guitar, but also able to play piano, drums, bass, and even ocarina! As it stands, it seems like I'm adding new instruments to my list as time goes on. I can only imagine the number of instruments I'll be able to play ten years from now!
Ultimately, my career plan is to become a composer. I'm well aware of the odds involved in becoming a rock star; I have no illusions on that subject. However, I don't want to live my life without making use of all this musical knowledge I've acquired over the years. I realized that I'm quite capable of writing fairly decent music, so I decided to major in Classical Music Composition. It is my hope that someday I'll be able to stand on a conductor's stand in front of a symphony orchestra to conduct my symphony for the world to hear.
Of course, my first love in music is the guitar. Above all, I am a classical guitarist. I didn't start with classical guitar, however. I started like most guitarists start: playing D, C, and G over some folk song lyrics. As time went on, I got into playing lead guitar. I eventually arrived at classical guitar, amazed at the level of talent involved in playing the instrument in that style. James Taylor was my original musical hero, so I knew I already had the coordination to put down the pick and start playing classical guitar. At that point, it was all about getting under the right teacher. That took me to Belmont University, and the rest is history.
So What Exactly Is This?
This website is basically my version of a portfolio. Many trained musicians (composers especially) keep a portfolio of their work. It saves the hassle of having to go through auditions blindly in hopes that you'll get a paying job. For example, let's say an independent film needs an original film score. Of course, they can't afford to pay Danny Elfman to compose music for their movie, so they begin the process of looking for a composer like myself. That's where this portfolio of mine comes in handy. If I submit this website to them, they'll be able to see and hear all that I'm capable of, and hopefully offer me a job!
"Now hold on," you might be saying, "this all sounds a little off. How could anyone make a career out of this?" Well, I happen to believe that you can make a career out of absolutely anything, just as long as you're creative enough to find ways to be original. The proof is in all of the entrepreneurs out there. Think about this: there are some children out there that have no idea how they would research for a school report without Google on their side. However, there are many adults out there that can remember the days before the internet, when research took a lot more effort on the student's part. The founders of Google were entrepreneurs, bringing to the world a new creative way to find information.
